Sandwiched between Edinburgh and the border with England, the Scottish Borders is an often-overlooked region with a lot to offer visitors

Historical attractions are particularly abundant in the Borders - Christian monks lived here in large numbers in the 13th and 14th centuries, and the beautiful abbeys they called home are now major visitor attractions. Castles can be found all over Scotland, and the Borders are no exception - the different styles and locations each tell a story of battles, defences and centuries gone by. Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott is one of the Borders' most famous residents and once lived in Abbotsford House. This and other stately homes are open to the public and now house museums and exhibitions, and they make for a great family day out.
Today, the Borders is a vibrant and exciting place to spend time - full of natural beauty, outdoor pursuits, pretty towns and villages with bustling streets and thriving communities.
