The isles of Lewis and Harris can be reached by ferry or by plane.
Harris can be reached by ferry from Uig on the Isle of Skye (taking just under 2hrs), and Lewis from Ullapool in the north-west of the Scottish mainland (taking around 2.5hrs). You can also travel by plane to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis from Glasgow or other minor Scottish airports. Ferries are operated by Caledonian Macbrayne and flights by Loganair. We recommend bringing or hiring a car or bicycle to explore the islands fully, although public buses connect the main towns, villages and attractions.
Both ferries and flights can be affected by unpredictable weather in this remote part of the world, and sea conditions in the Minch can be challenging at any time of year, so we make sure we always have a Plan B ready.
