Why book with The Tartan Road?

Local Experts

The Tartan Road headquarters are near Oban, right on the west coast of Scotland. We are one of the few tour operators based in the Scottish Highlands. Our local experts add their knowledge to your itinerary.

Scotland Self-drive Specialists

We think a self-drive holiday is one of the best ways of exploring Scotland. From the dramatic mountain scenery of the Highlands and the raw beauty of the Islands to the gentle hills of the Borders and the culture of the cities, this small country is easy to explore by car.

Bespoke Service

Every one of the holidays we put together is different. Whatever you love, whatever you enjoy and whatever your needs, all of our itineraries are tailored for you. We start from your wishes and go from there. The itineraries on our website are just an indicator of what is possible - and hopefully a source of inspiration.

Book with confidence

As a tour operator, all of the holidays we sell are covered by the package tour regulations. This means your holiday arrangements with us are 100% financially protected. Your payments are safeguarded with a guarantee that you will be refunded in the unlikely event of our insolvency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most common questions we get asked about Scotland. If you want to find out more about Scotland, travelling here, contact us and we'll do our best to help.

Between the cities, Scotland has an excellent public transport network, but outside of that, the best option is usually driving.

There are a few options for driving around Scotland:

  • Bring your own car
  • Hire a car
  • Hire a guide or chauffeur

If you're travelling out to the islands, then it might make sense to fly.

We're biased, but we think you should go everywhere in Scotland! Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • If you love unspoilt dramatic scenery, then visit Sutherland and Caithness in the far north.
  • If you want quaint coastal towns, try Berwickshire or the Moray Coast
  • If you want to see sparkling lochs and towering mountains, go to the Cowal Peninsular to see the Argyll Secret Coast
